Nouvelle version beta disponible, qui apporte une évolution majeure: le code est divisé en 2 "services", ce qui permet d'utiliser stumbler dans Firefox pour Android, ou tout autre programme.

MozStumbler is being split into service and client, the service being usable in Firefox for Android for stumbling. The service is also usable by 3rd parties as a stumbling library, although its use isn't documented yet. This resulted in a lot of code changes, and a longer turn-around time to get the next stable release out.

Help testing it out is much appreciated, and help checking to see what uploading bugs are closed as a side-effect of the changes. I would expect another beta next week as there are more map view bugs being fixed, and I am sure there will be some bugs for me to address due to the extent of the changes in this release.

Some rather major changes under the hood for code sharing with Android Firefox. Unfortunately, these changes aren't a major benefit to MozStumbler users. The good news in this release is that @keverets has updated the map view significantly.

The sync service is no longer used, an Android alarm is used for periodic uploading instead. This runs only when the device is awake. The sync stats (KB pending, uploaded) that were available in Android Sync account settings, are now added to the upload dialog. The database back end, is now file-based storage. Files are only cleared when upload is successful (or the server responds the stumbling data is corrupt); except in one other case, if files are 4 weeks old, all stumbles are wiped. This function is mostly there for privacy on Android Firefox (which wipes after 2 weeks), maybe this should be longer for MozStumbler.

La distribution Linux Fedora va maintenant utiliser Mozilla Location Service (MLS) en lieu et place du service de Google pour la géolocalisation dans leur version de Firefox!

I’m happy to report that the Fedora project is going to use the Mozilla Location Service (MLS) as the default geolocation provider for their Firefox Desktop packages.

Most desktop users use installers and builds provided directly by Mozilla, which can also be used under Linux operating systems. But some users prefer to use packages and builds from a distribution specific package management or installation tool.

Mozilla has a contract with Google to provide geolocation services for our desktop users, but this is limited to the builds and installers we produce ourselves. If a third party provides a separate build or package of Firefox Desktop, they have to reach their own deal for geolocation services with Google, like for example the Ubuntu project has done. The Fedora project for various reasons has decided to not buy a commercial contract for geolocation services and thus has been left without working HTML5 geolocation API’s for some time.

Today we as Mozilla run our own geolocation project with the Mozilla Location Service (MLS). The service is still provided as-is and not mature, but it does provide a basic service offering. For users of Fedora’s Firefox package using MLS will certainly provide a better experience than not having geolocation at all.

In addition users can also use our apps (https://location.services.mozilla.com/apps) to contribute to MLS and ensure that we have location data for their neighborhoods, improving the quality of service they get.

If you are curious and want to test MLS in your own browser, you can go to the settings in about:config and adjust the geo.wifi.uri setting. If you are using a Firefox build provided by Mozilla, you can use the following value:

but might run into rate limitations on the service side, to protect the service from abuse.

- MLS sera aussi utilisé sur les smartphone Firefox OS vendu en Inde.
- Mozilla et le projet OpenCellID collaborent pour fusionner leurs bases de données. Mozilla a collecté environ 2M d'emplacements, et OpenCellID 6M, donc le travail en commun va considérablement booster chacun des projets.

* The new Firefox OS phones released in India, the Intex Cloud FX and
the Spice Fire One, use MLS as their geolocation service!

* A zoomable world map of MLS coverage is published at [1]. To improve
our coverage for Firefox OS users in India, we are working with
Mozilla Reps to host stumbling meet-ups and competitions [2].

* Mozilla and the OpenCellID project are collaborating to publish our
cell location databases for use by anyone. The release announcement
and download links are at [3]. Mozilla has collected almost 2M cell
locations and OpenCellID has collected over 6M, so this data sharing
will boost both projects' coverage of the world's ~46M cells.

* "MozStumbler", our Android app to crowdsource the mapping of Wi-Fi and
cell locations, has an improved map UI that shows your tracks and
directs you to areas that need more measurements. You can download a
beta of the new UI from GitHub [4]. To increase the number of users,
we plan to publish MozStumbler in the Google Play Store when the new
map UI is polished.

* Firefox for Android includes a simple stumbler, but this feature has
been updated in Firefox 34 [5] to increase the data collection rate
without more power usage.
