Welcome back to Mozilla Links!

As you may already know, we are runnning on a new more robust list
server named Mailman that, like Mozilla, is an open source project.
This should help us prevent subscribers not receiving the latest release
and other issues. Now, you can update you subscription preferences
from Mozilla Links website at http://newsletter.mozdev.org .

Mozilla Links is now being translated into polish and japanese and
released just a little bit later than the english edition. Polish
readers may even subscribe directly to a polish edition of the
newsletter. Spanish and italian translations are coming soon. If you
would like to colaborate translating the newsletter into your own
language, feel free to contact us at newsletter-feedback@mozilla.org

Remember the design contest is running until october 15th. You still
have a chance to define the future shape of this newsletter. Check for

Featured Extension: X

If you are the kind who has concerns about being spied on the web or
by people in the real world, X may be for you. X consists mainly of an
X paranoic button you can add to the Mozilla Firebird toolbar. Press it
and X will ask you which traces you want to clear including cookies,
cache, form information, history, stored passwords and download history.

Mozilla Links Tip: Print Just What You Need

If you don't need to print a whole web page but only a paragraph or two
or an image, you can save some money and a tree at the same time by
selecting what you want left clicking on the web page over the desired
text. Or press F7 for caret browsing mode and youcan select with the
Shift and arrow keys the precise area you need.

Then, select Print in the File menu and check Selection. You can also
restrict your printing to a specific frame (a sub-window in a webpage)
if applicable or to specific pages. Use preview to check which pages
you need.

Also, don't forget your printers paper and ink/toner saver features
such as duplex printing, multiple pages per page, draft mode and
others.

Mozilla Links PowerTip: Bookmarklets Unleashed

Bookmarklets are small pieces of JavaScript code which can be added
to your bookmarks or personal toolbar. They can perform some useful
functions, such as stripping out background images, or sorting a table.
It may aid web developers in several ways such as testing style sheets,
autofilling web forms, displaying variables and many others.

Mozilla 1.5 Release Candidate 2 Out
-----------------------------------
Since the last issue of this newsletter, two test builds of Mozilla 1.5
have become available: Mozilla 1.5 Release Candidate 1 and Mozilla 1.5
Release Candidate 2. The latter build contains around twenty fixes that
were not in Release Candidate 1, including a new preference for
specifying whether opening a bookmark group should replace the existing
tabs or append the new pages to the current set. Look out for the final
version of Mozilla 1.5 in the first week of October.

mozdev Celebrates Third Anniversary
-----------------------------------
On September 20th, Mozilla project hosting site mozdev celebrated its
third anniversary. Since its launch in 2000, mozdev has provided free
hosting to over 400 Mozilla-related projects and now receives over 1
million page views a week. Looking further ahead, the site hopes to
become a non-profit organisation with tax-exempt status.

Mozilla End User Telephone Support Available Soon
-------------------------------------------------
In a message to the Mozilla marketing mailing list, Bart Decrem has
announced that the Mozilla Foundation will soon begin offering telephone
support to end users of Mozilla. The service, which will cost $39.95 per
incident, will be provided by DecisionOne, who currently offer telephone
and email support for Netscape. The Mozilla Foundation hopes to offer
email support soon and is actively looking for an appropriate vendor to
partner with.

Daniel Glazman Starting Company to Develop Composer
---------------------------------------------------
Ex-Netscape employee Daniel Glazman has announced that he is starting a
company to continue the development of Composer, the Mozilla Web page
editor. In a weblog posting that also covers meals with ex-colleagues
and the availability of nose drops, Daniel outlines his new venture: "I
am now in the process of starting my own company here in France to
continue working on Composer. This company will develop software
solutions for the World Wide Web and offer a variety of services around
web underlying technologies and open-source tools. I think we will even
become W3C member... Wish me good luck!"

Daniel has worked on the Editor portion of the Mozilla codebase for
several years and was employed by Netscape Communications Corporation
from November 2000 until July 2003. Earlier this year, he announced his
intention to continue maintaining Composer, which will eventually become
a standalone application like Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Thunderbird.

3. MOZILLA INSIDER

The Mozilla Foundation is planning to unveil several milestone releases
in the near future, with Mozilla 1.5, Mozilla Firebird 0.7 and Mozilla
Thunderbird 0.3 all coming off the 1.5 branch. In addition, an update to
Mozilla 1.4 is also nearing completion. As a result, there are lots of
new release candidates now available. Check out the following links,

Meanwhile, David Baron has started a couple of discussions about the
layout aspect of Mozilla, the part responsible for dispalying pages on

Following a short controversy, there is now a preference for specifying
whether opening a bookmark group should replace the existing tabs or
append the new pages to the current set (bug 203960).

Several Mail & Newsgroups improvements have been made recently too.
First up, the new mail notification (biff) is no longer triggered when
only junk mail arrives (bug 189289). Secondly, when the 'start my reply
above the quoted text' setting is selected, signatures are placed above
the quoted text (bug 62429). Finally, the Recipient column can now be
displayed in the thread pane of all folders and newsgroups, not just the
Sent folder (equally, the Sender column can now be displayed in the
thread pane of the Sent folder) (bug 36492).

4. MOZILLA PROJECTS

Project of the Week: Uzilla

The Uzilla project exists to increase the adoption of user centered
design techniques in software development as well as improve Mozilla
usability. Recently released, uzReview facilitates expert evaluation
of websites (http://uzilla.mozdev.org/heuristicreview.html), while
uzCardSort (http://uzilla.mozdev.org/cardsort.html) facilitates
assessing user models of a domain through a process known as card
sorting. A third component aims to provide screen capture
functionality via XPCOM (http://uzilla.mozdev.org/screencapture.html).
These projects are supported by Uzilla, LLC, "Tools for a Usable Web".

On our first issue we asked which was your favorite Mozilla product
and you let us know Mozilla Firebird, even being a preview technology
is at the top of preferences of the Mozilla community. Here are the

On past issue, we asked where do you use Mozilla products. The answer
